Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Richard E. Buckley shares facelift advances after honing his surgical skills at a major aesthetic meeting in Las Vegas, where masters share their techniques.
Advances in one of today’s most popular facial cosmetic surgeries, the facelift, have made results more natural and the surgery safer. And by combining the facelift with noninvasive procedures, cosmetic surgeons address signs of aging the facelift alone leaves behind, according to cosmetic surgeon Dr. Richard E. Buckley, medical director of MilfordMD Cosmetic Dermatology Surgery & Laser Center, in Milford, Penn. “The result is a comprehensive approach to reversing everything that makes the face look older,” according to Dr. Buckley, who attended master sessions on facelift and neck lift techniques given at the Vegas Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Dermatology conference in Las Vegas.

Dr. Buckley says professional meetings, like the Vegas Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Dermatology Conference, showcase the latest and greatest in cosmetic techniques and options. “The master sessions give aesthetic surgeons from around the world a chance to hone their skills with advanced surgical and nonsurgical techniques,” Dr. Buckley says. “It’s important to keep up with what the masters in our profession are doing because the facelift isn’t a turn-key procedure. Facelifts are done so many different ways. A person’s skin quality matters. The effect of aging on deflation and sagging are different from person to person. Surgeons who understand those nuances and know which technique is best for which patient will have the best outcomes.”
Despite the increasing availability of noninvasive and minimally-invasive facial rejuvenation options, there’s nothing that tightens sagging facial skin as much as the facelift. It’s an important tool in the facial rejuvenation arsenal, according to Dr. Buckley.
“Yes, facelift surgery requires more recovery time, but there’s a lot we do today to make facelift patients more comfortable and safer during surgery. At MilfordMD, we perform surgical procedures under tumescent anesthesia so patients are always awake and comfortable. That eliminates the risk associated with general anesthesia. We’re also performing surgical procedures in the safety of our surgical facility, which is nationally accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC),” Dr. Buckley says.
Facelift surgeons at the meeting discussed, among other things, how to maximize facelift results based on the direction the surgeon lifts facial skin, according to Dr. Buckley. “The approach we take to lifting skin makes a big difference in how patients will look after the surgery. It’s important to do the procedure in such a way that preserves a person’s natural look and doesn’t result in tell-tale facelift giveaways,” Dr. Buckley says.
While results from a facelift, which involves tightening underlying structures, lifting sagging skin and removing excess facial skin, go a long way in turning back time, there are signs of aging, including fine wrinkles and sun damage, that the facelift doesn’t address.
Dr. Buckley treats facial volume loss with fat and/or synthetic fillers, such as Restylane. To treat aging skin’s texture, tone and fine wrinkles, Dr. Buckley says there are a range of noninvasive and minimally-invasive options, including lasers, peels and microneedling.
“Using a combination of nonsurgical facial rejuvenation options along with the facelift, we can restore not only facial skin, but also facial structure and shape to what a person looked like 10 or more years ago,” Dr. Buckley says. “The goal is to reverse facial aging in a way that looks beautifully natural to that individual patient.”
