Noninvasive skin tightening with Thermage and Ultherapy are among the more popular cosmetic surgery procedures today, but they can be costly. Dr. Richard E. Buckley developed a laser skin tightening approach, called Dermatyte, to give patients a more economical option.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Richard E. Buckley has developed a noninvasive laser skin tightening approach, called DermaTyte, which rivals popular skin tightening procedures Thermage and Ultherapy. DermaTyte is done in the ofἀ渄ce and completed in minutes with no downtime. It’s safe for all skin colors and all ethnicities and can be performed on any area of the body, including the face and neck, to tighten skin and create a rejuvenated result.
How does DermaTyte compare to Thermage and Ultherapy? According to Dr. Buckley, Thermage, uses radio frequency to tighten skin. “Thermage uses a coolant on the skin’s surface and then delivers energy deep into the skin to begin the tightening process,” he says. “Ultherapy is different energy. It’s highly-focused ultrasound and doesn’t require skin cooling.”
Ultherapy has benefits the other technologies don’t, according to Dr. Buckley, who offers patients all three options at his MilfordMD Cosmetic Dermatology Surgery & Laser Center, in Milford, Penn. With the ultrasound, Dr. Buckley says he can visualize the full thickness of the skin on the monitor to help guide treatment. “So, we can see the exact areas to which we’re delivering the energy, which is a nice feature of the device,” he says. “Ultherapy also is FDA approved for skin lifting.”
Unlike these other options, DermaTyte, uses laser energy to tighten the skin. Dr. Buckley developed the approach with an FDA cleared laser to treat skin without the need for anesthesia. The nonablative, noninvasive procedure uses infrared laser technology to deliver laser energy through the skin to deeply heat the dermal collagen and to preferentially target water and collagen within the dermis. The result is a shrinking of the deeper layer of skin’s tissues. The procedure also stimulates new collagen.
“DermaTyte is ideal for people who want a noninvasive skin tightening procedure without downtime,” he says. “In a few treatments, we can achieve noticeable improvements in fine lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, acne and acne scars.” To achieve optimal results with DermaTyte, most patients need one treatment for every decade of life. So, a 50-year-old patient might need a series of five treatments, done three to four weeks apart.
Among the benefits of DermaTyte is that it costs less than Thermage or Ultherapy. That’s because Thermage and Ultherapy require that physicians use consumables, which are parts that are disposed of with each treatment. Those consumables add to the cost of the procedure. The laser Dr. Buckley uses during DermaTyte treatment does not use consumables.
“Each option has its benefits. Different skin tightening procedures are best for different patients,” Dr. Buckley says. “The good news with DermaTyte is that patients have yet another skin tightening option—one that’s more affordable than the others.”
