MICRODERMABRASION

A Brief History of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical, non-invasive modality for treating superficial skin blemishes resulting from trauma, aging or prolonged exposure to the sun. Medical microdermabrasion became available in the United States in 1998 under the Parisian Peel brand and others. In Europe, where the technology originated, microdermabrasion has been used successfully since at least 1992 to treat acne, fine lines and wrinkles, unwanted pigmentation and other superficial skin damage.

In clinical experience to date, a consensus is emerging among plastic surgeons and dermatologists that medical microdermabrasion adds unique value to their therapeutic and cosmetic armamentarium. Physicians are also reporting that high patient satisfaction with the quick results of microdermabrasion has helped “jump-start” patient compliance to an overall skin care regimen.

Before & After

How Microdermabrasion Works

Treatment is delivered using an electro-mechanical device such as the Parisian Peel Medical Microdermabrasion System that gently abrades the skin surface using chemically inert micro-crystals and air suction. The clinician uses a handpiece to direct a stream of crystals and mild suction exactly where needed on the patient’s skin. The gentle abrasive action of the crystals combines with the suction to exfoliate the epidermis while uncovering the smooth underlayer to promote a thicker, healthier dermis.

Application of Microdermabrasion

Simplicity makes microdermabrasion both safe and economical to use as an alternative or adjunct to laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels. Treatment can be administered in 15 to 20 minutes by Dr. Buckley.

Patients require no anesthesia, experience no “down time” and can return immediately to their daily activities. Physicians are reporting optimal results after 5 – 8 treatments, depending on the patient’s skin type and condition. Microdermabrasion works equally effectively on all Fitzpatrick Skin Types and can be administered as often as indicated without fear of side effects.
