What is PROLIPO?
ProLipo, an FDA approved laser used under the skin with local anesthesia is a minimally invasive procedure that liquefies fat cells while contouring the body. It’s a great alternative to traditional liposuction and offers many benefits. Rapid results, minimal discomfort, less time in the procedure room, and done right in the MilfordMD office are just a few of the benefits patients appreciate. Other benefits include the use of local anesthetic rather than general anesthetic, minimal or no bruising and a much shorter downtime. Although many of Dr. Buckley’s patients have returned to work the day after the procedure, Dr. Buckley does recommend taking one day off. And with only one treatment necessary in most cases, it won’t take up much of your busy life.
There are many areas of the body that can be treated with ProLipo. Basically, any area with unwanted pockets of fat can be treated. The more popular areas include: jowls, neck, under the chin, bra roll, saddlebags, the abdominal area, hips, inner and outer thighs, buttocks and ankles. Results are visible shortly after treatment and they will continue to improve over the course of 12 months.
PROLIPO procedure
So just how is ProLipo done? ProLipo delivers laser energy through a slender fiber under the skin directly to the area of body fat being treated. It liquefies the fat cells and tightens collagen while contouring the body. Local anesthetic is first infused into the targeted fat space, and once completely numb, a small tube containing a laser fiber is passed through a tiny opening in the skin. The laser energy is absorbed by the fatty areas resulting in the destruction of the fat cells. The laser also tightens the skin through its remodeling of dermal collagen. The final result is the removal of body fat and a more contoured body.
Recovery
Recovery time is one of the many benefits ProLipo patients love. With minimal downtime, you won’t lose much time waiting to heal. Tenderness may be noted for one to four weeks. The discomfort has been described as being similar to a rigorous workout. And the best part, patients are encouraged to continue being active after the procedure. You can drive a car the following day and return to a normal work schedule just 24 to 72 hours after the treatment. With traditional liposuction under general anesthesia, the recovery time and downtime is much longer.
The ideal candidate for ProLipo laser liposculpture is someone who is reasonably fit with localized pockets of fat. Unhealthy individuals and people with underlying systemic medical illness are not suited for ProLipo.
What are patients saying?
“I’ve done diet and exercise and I’ve lost some weight, it’s just that I always have that problem area, which was my bra strap area, and it was time to make a decision whether or not I was going to continue to fight that area or have a little help,” said Tara. “I was fully awake. It felt like a deep tissue massage. I could already tell a huge difference after five days. Even after a week I was ecstatic.”
“I chose to have ProLipo done because I wanted an option to regular liposuction. I wanted an option for the downtime, the pain after the procedure. It was really simple,” said Lisa. “When I looked at my before and after pictures I was so amazed. I couldn’t believe how wonderful it worked. The recovery process was simple. I was back to work the next day.”
If a more contoured body without losing much time in your busy life is what you are looking for, ProLipo can help.

What is ProLipo?
ProLipo is an FDA approved, minimally invasive laser-assisted lipolysis procedure for ablating and melting unwanted fat. The technique involves the use of fiber-delivered laser energy to the target fatty tissue. The procedure is ideally used in combination with other lipo treatment modalities, but it can be used as a stand alone procedure. ProLipo requires the use of tumescent local anesthesia, and does not require general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. There is minimal downtime and recovery takes only a couple of days. In addition to ablating and melting fat, Pro Lipo also tightens skin through its collagen remodeling and neoformation effects.
Who is a candidate for this procedure?
Healthy individuals with localized fatty areas resistant to diet and exercise are potentially excellent candidates.
Who is not a candidate?
Unhealthy individuals with underlying systemic medical illnesses are not suited to undergo Pro Lipo.
Which body treatment areas are best suited?
Used alone or in combination with tumescent liposuction, it is perfectly suited for treatment of the following body treatment areas:
chin, cheek, jowls, under chin, neck, back of neck, upper arms, upper back, upper and lower abdomen, flanks and sides, hips and waist, inner and outer thighs, buttocks, banana folds, knees, male chest
How much fat can be removed during a ProLipo laser lipolysis treatment session?
Depending on the amount of targeted fatty tissue, several liters of fat can potentially be removed during a treatment session, especially if suction is utilized during the procedure.
Is fat removal permanent?
As with all lipo treatment modalities, destruction of fat during a treatment session is partial, not complete. Removal of all fat in the fat space would juxtapose skin directly over muscle. Obviously, if an individual gains weight, the fat will more likely accumulate in areas not treated. The best way to maintain results following a Pro Lipo treatment session is to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen.
How is Pro Lipo performed?
It is most safely performed by a qualified cosmetic surgeon using the tumescent anesthesiologic technique. This technique involves injecting dilute local anesthetic solution containing epinephrine into the targeted fat space. Once the fat space is completely numb, a cannula containing a laser fiber is passed through small openings in the skin. When the laser system is pulsed, the laser energy is absorbed by the targeted fatty areas resulting in destruction of the fat cells. The laser also produces skin tightening through its remodeling and neoformation of dermal collagen. A treatment session usually takes 1-4 hours to perform, and routinely involves some method of fat suctioning.
What is the recovery process?
Patients usually experience only mild pain and bruising following their treatment session. Tylenol and oral narcotic analgesics for a couple of days provide adequate postoperative pain relief. Compression garments are worn for a week or so to decrease swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Patients are able to resume their normal activities within 1-2 days following a ProLipo treatment session, including return to work.
When are results apparent after the procedure?
Some results may be seen immediately if significant fat suctioning treatment modalities were also used during the treatment session. Shrinkage, tightening, and compacting of the fat space occurs over several weeks and months. Remodeling and neoformation of collagen to produce skin tightening occurs slowly over weeks to as much as 9 months.
How many treatment sessions are possible?
The number of focal areas of adiposity comprising distinct body treatment areas for Pro Lipo ranges from 1-2, to as many as 6 or more. Much depends on whether Pro Lipo treatment areas can be consolidated into one treatment session, or several treatment sessions are required. Staged treatments usually require a 6-9 month recovery period before a second Pro Lipo treatment session is performed on a given body treatment area.
Is it covered by insurance companies?
ProLipo treatment sessions are cosmetic in nature, and not covered by any insurance companies.
Treatment Session Costs
Price quotes tailored for you specific needs are given at the time of your consult, after your discussion and evaluation. Prices for Pro Lipo are based on the number of body treatment areas, the amount of localized fat, and whether other lipo treatment modalities will also be performed during a Pro Lipo treatment session.
