“There’s a buzz in the air about CoolSculpting. Patients are asking about it, and people are calling to find out if we offer this relatively new and ‘hot’ fat reduction option,” Dr. Buckley says. “Having an event at the office, where people can learn about it for free, without pressure or hassles, is ideal for those who are toying with the idea of doing something noninvasively to sculpt their bodies.”
Like the name implies, CoolSculpting is a technology that uses controlled cooling to freeze unwanted areas of fat. There are no incisions, injections or needles involved. Rather, Dr. Buckley and his staff deliver the cooling without going into the skin. The fat cells crystalize, die and are naturally eliminated by the body—never to return.
“This is not a procedure for weight loss or control, but it does work beautifully to help sculpt the body in areas that generally resist efforts through diet and exercise,” Dr. Buckley says. “The best candidates for CoolSculpting have targeted fat pockets, such as those under the upper arms, around the love handles, on the thighs, as well as under the chin.” CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction, but it does not reach the degree of fat reduction that laser liposuction can achieve, according to Dr. Buckley.
“At our upcoming CoolSculpting event, we’ll address, more specifically, which fat bulges will respond best to CoolSculpting and which pockets of fat may achieve better results with other body sculpting options,” Dr. Buckley says.
The number of treatments needed and the length of treatment varies depending on the areas being addressed. Dr. Buckley and his staff can treat more than one area at each office visit. While the treatment can cause some discomfort, temporary numbness, tingling or pain, many patients are comfortable enough to read or even nap during CoolSculpting treatments. CoolSculpting patients might see changes to their bodies as early as three weeks after treatment, but they typically see the most dramatic results after two months. In fact, the body can continue to naturally rid itself of fat cells for up to six months post-treatment.
Patients can go back to work or activities immediately after treatment. In most cases, the only physical evidence that someone has had CoolSculpting is redness and firmness, temporary blanching and mild bruising around the edges of the treatment area. Any lingering side effects, such as tingling and stinging at the treated area, will typically go away in the days or weeks after CoolSculpting treatment.
While CoolSculpting is generally very safe, some rare but more serious side effects have been reported. One is that the treated area can actually become enlarged months after treatment, which requires surgical intervention.
“Our experience with CoolSculpting is that it is safe and effective. Patients have told us they are extremely satisfied with results. Many have come back for other noninvasive or minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, such as fillers or Botox,” Dr. Buckley says. “The good news for patients who want fat removed is that all the options we offer today are safe and effective. And we can fine-tune results so that we’re actually sculpting the body—even to the point of creating the etched look of a six-pack on the abdomen.”
Seating for the CoolSculpting CoolEvent this Summer is limited. Reservations are required. To sign up for the June 16 event at MilfordMD, call 570-296-4000.
